Servicing And Maintaining Your Dehumidifier

Typically, dehumidifiers are free from trouble but you need to have them maintained. This involves emptying the tank and cleaning them periodically. This is to ensure that bacteria and any mildew are handled. The coils should be vacuumed to remove the dirt and the power cord and the plug need to be removed if at all they are worn.

Why you need a dehumidifier

When summer comes, there is a lot of moisture and it saps energy from us taking out sleep and often causing safety and health issues especially for the elderly in the society. Basements smell musty and damp because of humidity and if the air conditioning is not adequate, you should purchase a dehumidifier to help you dry out the home.

Buying a dehumidifier also helps in the fall and on spring. This is when there is rain and when the temperatures outside do not require any kind of air conditioning. The dehumidifier has humidistat, a fan, a compressor and an evaporator coil. This is what helps the dehumidifier to remove air moisture. This allows you to have a level of moisture that is acceptable in summer.

If the temperatures outside drop and then you place the dehumidifier in your foundation, it will lead to freezing up of the coil if it is turned on. In such a case, you only need to turn it off and then try again when the need arises.

There is the portable dehumidifier that is appropriate when there is high humidity. This has to be emptied once every day. If the tank is full, the humidifier automatically switches off and only works if emptied.

Fixing the dehumidifier

It is not hard to tell when you should fix the dehumidifier. When the weather is muggy and hot and there is not too much water inside the tank, you need to take care of the machine. You should:

  • Clean and then vacuum the coils. When coils are dirty, they will freeze. Whenever they have dust accumulated on them, they need to be cleaned immediately.
  • Tighten screws on the shaft of the fan. This is because it is possible that it slipped leading to the failure of the dehumidifier.
  • Replace the motor of the fan. This is when you notice that it has very low revolutions in a minute. This is not something that you can do. You will have to find a service technician for this. The compressor may have failed or the dehumidifier may have failed to recharge.

There are also times when you see bent blades. When this is the case, you will need to replace them before the damage gets to your motor. You may have to get brand new ones. Find the name of the manufacturer, and model number available in the manual. This is the best place where blades can be replaced.

The other thing you should always remember is the fact that a dehumidifier can fail due to a faulty humidistat. In such a case, it should be replaced.

Choosing the Right Central Air Conditioner

There are many different factors that must be taken into consideration when choosing a central air conditioner. These air conditioners not only keep your home cool but they can also dehumidify and filter the air. One thing to consider is what part of the home do you need the air conditioning.

Factors to consider

• Size of the central air conditioner-you want to make sure that the cooling power of the air conditioner matches the characteristics of the home. The contractor that is installing the air conditioner can do a load calculation to make sure the there is a proper account of the window area, insulation levels, and size of home are illustrated.
• Where it is going to be installed-where it is place can affect the efficiency of the air conditioner because if there is too much interference the air will not flow through the area freely.
• Moisture performance-how comfortable you are will depend on controlling the humidity. Air conditioner systems will vary in how they are able to extract the moisture from the air so talk to the dealer about the unit's performance before purchasing a central air conditioner to be sure it the right one for your home.
• Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (seer ratings) -this will give you the necessary information on the efficiency of the unit. Most of the older units have a rating of seven while the newer ones will not have a rating below thirteen.

Many homeowners have the misconception that the larger the size of the central unit the more attractive, efficient, and appealing it is but there are drawbacks with choosing a large size system.

• This system will turn on and off frequently
• More expensive
• Have more wear and tear
• It will not run long enough to take the moisture out of the air
• Uses a lot of electricity giving the homeowner higher electric bills.

Advantages of a central cooling unit

• They are the most effective way to regulate cool air as the air is sent along a direct route to the individual rooms
• They make less noise than window air conditioners
• The visible part of the unit is the compressor, and it is located outside of the home so they do not affect the view from the window, take up any extra space in the room, block any spaces, and convenient to operate
• More energy efficient
• Most work in a reverse cycle too, which means that in the winter they will pump in hot air.
• They keep your own home cool instead of just one room

If you are still unsure take to the dealer before buying one.

Freon Leaks In Your Central Heating and Air System

Let's start off by talking about freon, what it is, and why your system needs it. There seems to be many misconceptions that homeowners have about freon. Let's start off by talking about freon, what it is, and why your system needs it. There seems to be many misconceptions that homeowners have about freon. Freon is not like gas to your car, or some kind of fuel the air conditioning system uses. All Air Conditioning units are completely sealed closed loop systems, they are not designed to leak, ever. Just saying that clears up 99% of misconceptions about it. Freon is the refrigerant in your air conditioning system that transfers heat from the air in your house, and removes it to the outdoors. It is pumped by your compressor in a constant loop, from your condenser (which houses the compressor) to your evaporator coil (usually in your attic, or where the furnace / Air handler is located in your home) and back again. Round and round it goes, pulling the heat out of the air as it gets pushed across the fins of the evaporator coil (kind of looks like a radiator).

When people say they need a freon fill, the first thing that pops into every technicians mind is “where is it leaking from.” the answer to that question is often, from the evaporator section of the air conditioning system. The Evaporator coil is where the heat transfer happens, as warm air hits a cold coil, it forms condensation. This humid, wet environment acts on the metals of that coil, to oxidize and form rust and break those alloys down over time. Often this results in microfractures, and small, diffuse pinhole leaks. These leaks can range from big to small. If you've ever had your unit topped off only to find the next day it was blowing warm air again, then you have a large leak. If your unit only takes a pound or two of refrigerant, but last you the whole summer season, chances are you have a small leak.

Common signs and symptoms of a freon leak can be, warm, or less cool air blowing from your vents. Units taking longer to reach temperature that the thermostat is calling for, or not reaching temperature at all. Ice forming in your coil, and traveling down the line set to your compressor, enveloping it in a shroud of ice (kind of weird to see on a 95 degree day). When in doubt some of the things to first check your air filters, make sure they're clean. If it's been a month or longer, go ahead and change them. check the outside unit for ice on the line set or around the compressor. If it's there, shut off the unit and seek professional help. If it is not, feel the air temperature coming off the unit, it should be hotter than the outside air temperature, if it is great! but that means your problem may lie elsewhere.

Running a unit that is low on freon is the equivalent to running your car while it's low on coolant or oil. It's not going to end well, and even if it's providing some laundry from the heat you could do more damage to the unit.

If you are considering outdoor warming, for example in the backyard, there are two options for how to do it. There are patio heaters or fireplaces and each has their own pros and cons and you should take the time to consider these advantages and disadvantages very carefully before making a final decision.

Pros and cons of fireplaces

As for fireplaces, it might surprise you that there are a variety of options to choose from. In fact, there are almost four kinds of fireplaces that you can buy, and these are stainless steel, fireplaces, copper, and finally gas-powered. Stainless steel fireplaces are excellent for those who want a style that is a bit more modern and looks smarter.

A bonfire table is a large table where the fireplace is located in the middle, so everyone can enjoy the heat from the fire. A car-shaped copper fireplace is another popular style, with the added benefit that it can be used for several purposes, as it is possible to fill it with ice and use it to keep the drinks cold in the summer heat. Gas fireplaces are practical as they can provide instant heat and fire and are ideal for those who prefer not to wait for the fire to reach its full intensity.

Is the size of the car important?

With fireplaces, the size of the vessel is all about it and it can be a drawback with fireplaces, as you have to look for fire vessels around 45 to 55 cm, as these are the right size for an average piece of firewood. If you choose a smaller fire tank, save the fire and then you do not get as much radiant heat from a smaller fireplace as you would expect from a larger one. One of the biggest disadvantages of owning a fireplace instead of a terrace heater is that you have to drain the fireplace for ash.

What about patio heaters?

The second choice when it comes to outdoor heaters is available in the form of terrace heaters. They are primarily designed for easy and safe use, and are mainly available in two variants, gas-powered and power-driven. Gas-powered terrace heaters can run on gas from mains or bottled gas. Gas-powered terrace heaters are usually free standing, while electric terrace heaters can either be free-standing or mounted on a wall or ceiling.

If you want to heat a smaller area, you can also shop for terrace heaters that can be placed on a table, and these are ideal as they are also easy to move with and less intrusive than the larger and free standing of the kind. For all the different types, except the wall mounted versions, make sure that your patio heater is equipped with a safety switch that turns off the heater once it reaches its intensity.

In order to keep your air conditioner running smoothly you need to do ac maintenance. It will help to extend the life of your air conditioner and help save money on energy. You should always do the ac maintenance or have it done before you start to use it at the beginning of the summer and the end of the summer. The air conditioner has moving parts and to help prevent any injuries make sure that you shut off the power before doing maintenance. On a central air conditioner there should be a shut-off box near the unit.

After it is turned off you need to clean around the outside of the unit. Overtime there may be an accumulation of dead leaves so these need to be removed. During the time you are using your central air conditioner make sure that you keep any grass from mowing is kept away from the unit to maximize its efficiency. Rake up any dead leaves and debris along with cutting back any vegetation or branches at least twenty-four inches from the central air conditioner. This makes sure that there is the right amount of air flow around the unit. During the winter to make the spring ac maintenance easier and quicker place cover over the top of the unit, holding it down with plywood to keep stuff from falling inside the unit. Just cover the top and not the sides because covering the side can cause a build-up of moister and cause corrosion.

Use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the fasteners that are holding down the fan cage so you can remove it. If there are any leaves or debris inside the interior you can remove them using a wet / dry vacuum cleaner like a Shop Vac or you can do it by hand. After removing the outer covers take your Shop Vac and use the brush attachment to remove all of the outside dirt. Next you need to use the garden hose with a gently spray to spray through the fins. You need to do this from the inside out so you can remove all debris between them outside on the ground instead of back inside the central air conditioner. If you notice that the fins are really dirty and the water is not cleaning them properly you could use a commercial cleaning spray just for this job. You can get them from your home improvement stores. Make sure that when using this product for ac maintenance that you read the directions carefully.

Once you have finished you ac maintenance it is time to turn the air conditioner back on. It is a simple task that a homeowner can do to help their central air conditioner to run efficiently.

Air Conditioning – Automating Your System

With today's technology it is very easy to automate your air conditioning system. Automation will help prevent you from having to get up and down to fix the temperature in the room. It can also save you money using a more efficient system that is provided by the programmable thermostat.

Total home automation

Some homeowners are automating their own homes and not just their air conditioning systems. With total automation it will allow the homeowner to control all of the electronic devices and utilities with a single remote control. The remote control can be managed from your computer, mobile device, laptop, iPad, or just using the stand-alone controller. In the beginning it is an expensive investment but will pay for itself with energy savings. It can automate your air conditioning system, garage doors, security, lights, and more. In your home, with this type of system you will have a thermostat in each room instead of one central thermostat that controls the temperature of the entire home. With individual thermostats each person in the home can have the room at the temperature they choose, especially bedrooms as most have different temperatures that they like to sleep in.

Programmable thermostat

Before you purchase a programmable thermostat for your air conditioning system make sure that it will work with this type of thermostat. This type of thermostat helps give the homeowner an energy efficient home and save money in the long run. The thermostat works by adjusting the cool air output to the changes in the temperature outside. This way the unit will only work when needed.

Automated heating system

For those cool days when you only want certain rooms to be warm, this is the type of automation you would need. For example, if you watch television in the living room or den and then take a shower before bedtime you can program your bathroom and bedroom to be warm before you get there. This helps prevent you from exiting a warm shower into a cool bedroom.

Smartphone and mobile device remote control

These are used when you have total home automation to help control the temperature of your home from a distance. When no one is at home and you forgot to turn set the air conditioning before you left you can use a smartphone or mobile device to do this. This will help to save on your monthly electric bill. To use either of these two devices you just have to download the app to either one.

These are just some of the many ways in which you can use automation to help save on your electric bills and to have an energy efficient home. Talk to an air conditioning professional to find out which is right for your home.

Choosing the best HVAC contractor is not an easy thing and there are things that have to be mastered so as to make sure you end up with only the best. Contractors are different and therefore you should carry out adequate research to ensure that you find the best in the field. The contractors usually have a terrible reputation for different reasons, but it does not mean that all of them are bad. There are still very good companies that can handle your HVAC needs. You should still give someone a chance to install your air conditioning. Choosing a contractor is therefore a great part of how good the services you get will be like. When you choose carefully, you will not be in any trouble and the conditioning that you get installed will actually be able to serve you for a long time.

1. Estimates over the phone

If you call a contractor and they are ready to give you an estimate or bid over the phone, you should be worried. You need to know that each air conditioning unit is unique from all others. Giving a bid or even an estimate over the phone is not a reasonable thing. This is because there are very many factors that should be considered before any money can be quoted. The best contractor will first check the registers, the insulation, the ducting, the windows you have and so many other things. All these things are physical and you can not conduct them over the phone. Even if they do visit, do not be too comfortable with a person who does not inspect the house critically before giving a calculation.

2. Replacement

If a contractor replaces the old conditioner with another one that is similar to the unit, be very careful. A good unit can last for around 15 years. Just like vehicles get upgrades even though they are in the same category, the same thing applies to the air-conditioning units. A hood contractor will give some recommendations so as to make sure that your home is up to date and efficient enough. When they pitch to you old models, they may be trying to unload some old inventory that will not sell. The most current and most energy efficient units should be used so as to give you the kind of service that you deserve.

3. Experience

It is true that experience experiences a lot of people, but you need to be aware that it is not the only thing. Someone may tell you they have been doing the installations in a certain way for many years, but you should always know that the business keeps on changing as other technologies do. There are so many exciting technologies that are coming into the market every now and then. Such technological advances can actually decrease the utility costs and offer better cooling. The contractor should be able to use the cutting edge technology and this includes control units that are up to date. While experience is important, it is not the only thing to consider.

4. Licensing

The best contractors need licensing from the authoring body and this is something that you should always check.

If you are hearing strange noises from the boiler, it could be a sign of a serious problem, it may be working right now, but soon or later it will break down and you will have no hot water or heating.

It's probably best now, to call in the local Gas Safe Registered boiler engineer before it stops working, but mainly to ensure it's not posing any serious safety risks to you and your family.

What are these strange noises from the boiler?

Noises from the boiler can be caused by many things, it could be a build up of limescale on the heat exchanger, sludge even a blockage.

When the flow of water within the boiler is restricted, the boiler will start to make a banging noise, this is due to the water heating up, expanding and pressure building, It needs to go somewhere,

It will normally release itself up the expansion pipe, or if the boiler is pressurized, it should release through the safety pressure relief valve.

Kettling Noise

You may have noticed over time a whistling noise coming from the boiler, a little like when you boil a kettle to make your coffee, as it starts to heat up you start to hear a noise, this is called kettling.

Kettling can be caused by air trapped in the system, if this is the case, it's typically a quick fix to make the boiler quite again.

Kettling is also caused by the limbscale on the walls of the heat exchanger. Overtime as the buildingscale builds up, the kettling noise gets louder, this will eventually cause the boiler to stop working.

Faulty Pump

Another reason you may hear strange noises from the boiler is the pump. The pump works by circulating the water through the whole system. Should the pump start to lose its power, you may well hear strange some noises from the boiler.

Internal Fan

The boiler fan is another part that over time tends to start making a strange noise. It starts off with a low screaming sound then gets louder and louder, other times it like a clunking noise. The reason the fan starts to make a noise is due to the bearings, they tend to dry out, eventually, the fan will become located and need to be replaced.

The Boiler

The boiler is a very important part of your home, it supplies you with hot water, as well as all the heating you need in the colder months, and yet it always looks to get overlooked until something goes wrong.

Should you start to notice strange noises from your boiler, the first thing you should do is switch it off and arrange for it to be checked over straightaway. By keeping the boiler working you could cause more problems.

Preventative Maintenance

Ensure you have some form of maintenance or service carried out on the boiler every year. Setup an annual contract with a local company who will make sure everything is working as it should be and most important of all SAFE.

Conclusion

If you hear strange noises from the boiler switch it off, do not risk it. Arrange for someone to come along and investigate and fix the problem. Do not forget because only use a gas safe registered company or person.
