What Is Wrong With My Air Conditioning Unit?

That's right. The weather is warm up and your air conditioning is acting up. What can you do?

This quick guide may help you with some of the answers.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking?

Chances are your unit may not be leaking at all. Without your heating and air conditioning unit is geothermal, there is no water in your air conditioning unit. The fluid that cools and warms your indoor unit is Freon. Freon is a compressed gas in liquid form and when it is not pressurized, expands to its gaseous state at normal atmospheric pressures.

What does that mean? It means that the only fluid involved in the heating and cooling process turns to a gas when there is a leak.

That still does not help?

Fret not. What may seem as an expensive repair is just proof of a working air conditioning unit. What you see is the condensation from the coils. The coils pull moisture out of the air and drains it outside of your home. If you see water draining anywhere else but the outside of the home, you have a blockage or another problem and you need to call an HVAC contractor.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

First things first, it may seem obvious, but you would not believe how many service calls can be saved by checking this first. Is the thermostat set to “Heat” or “Cool?” If it is set to “heat,” there's your answer right there. Flip that switch and enjoy the cool air.

Now, if that is not the case, go ahead and take a seat. Multiple things could cause your HVAC system to blow hot or warm air. Some of the possible reasons for the hot air could be:

  • No or Low Freon
  • Frozen Coils
  • Wiring Malfunction
  • Outdoor Fan Malfunction

All of these possibilities need technicians to come and look at your unit. We service and repair most models of major HVAC brands.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Freezing?

If you live in the South, then humidity is no stranger to you. When your air conditioner is working, the warmth is taken from the surrounding air. This rapid change in temperature causes any moisture to condense that is typically drained through a pipe to the outside of the house. This water is most likely what you are seeing freeze.

While you will need a certified technician to find the actual cause of the freezing, the answers can be as simple as: coolant, mechanics, or airflow.

If you coolant is low, then the coils are dropping below the freezing point and trapping all the moisture on the coils. If you have mechanical issues like a faulty metering device, your coolant may be condensing faster than it is evaporating, causing the moisture to freeze. If your airflow is not adequate (from a dirty filter or dirty coil), there is less heat to remove. When there is not enough heat to remove, this causes the refrigerant to drop below freezing.

If your A / C unit is freezing, it is best to call an HVAC company to check it out before it stops working on the day you need it most.

Why Electric Heating Systems Are Already The Future

For most homeowners, changing their central heating operation is probably not very far up their 'to do' list, but for those who are moving into a new property or in the property renovation market, it's a serious consideration. For most homeowners, changing their central heating operation is probably not very far up their 'to do' list, but for those who are moving into a new property or in the property renovation market, it's a serious consideration. At the moment, gas prices are marginally cheaper than electricity and so it sometimes makes sense to a lot of people to hang on to their gas systems for the time being, but if you're planning for the future you need to be thinking about the scale of your investment and how things might change over the next few years.

While gas central heating systems are cheaper like for like, electric heating can really compete when certain methods and habits are adopted. For example, a gas central heating system will offer you a single thermometer which you may adjust up and down, trying to balance warmth and cost-efficiency. An electric heating system however, while marginally more expensive on the surface, will provide you with an array of options for programming and scheduling, giving you ample opportunity to tailor your heating timetable to trim costs and save energy.

Most electric heating systems will not have a 'central' point like a boiler or control panel – they might not even run on the same circuit. They will be installed as individual units with their own independent programs. While this may seem long winded, it's not without its charms. Having independent units in each room may make the initial programming a little bit of a session (going from room to room and programming them individually), the benefits will certainly outweigh the cost of time. Installing an electric heating system in this way means that, essentially, every room in your house is operating in a separate timeline, carefully planned to tie in with your own daily schedule. The energy saving potential here should be obvious to those who have thought about it or have been afraid to pop their gas thermostat up by one or two degrees because one of the rooms in the house feels chilly.

In short, electric heating systems are going to surface sooner or later due to scarcity of fossil fuels and increasing gas prices. What people are not aware of, is that a lot of the technology we'll be hanging on when this day comes is already right here and working near perfectly. Those embracing solar panels or already pursuing more energy efficient solutions are missing a real trick if they have not already invested.

How Do Far Infrared Heating Panels Deliver Heat?

Far infrared heating technology is a mystery to some. Far infrared heating technology is a mystery to some. After all, it's a new technology which has not quite caught the eye of the mainstream yet, and many of us are quite comfortable with our gas central heating systems at the moment. But what happens when gas becomes too expensive or the reserves begin to run dry? Of course, the Government has its eye on renewable energy generation, but what happens when we finally take that leap? Are we prepared? Many of us are now considering solar panels, electric radiators and other ways of loosing our dependency on gas and the big energy suppliers, and it's because of this that infrared heating technology has found a nice place on the map. But what is it?

Far infrared works very differently from the standard radiators and electric heaters we've become accustomed to. Whereas older heaters such as convector units and fan assisted storage heaters would push hot air out into the room, warming us up in the process, infrared heaters work completely silently, and focus on heating the actual objects in the room. Take the sun for example. The sun shines rays down on us and they heat the surface area they come into contact with, such as the pavement and our houses (and us!). Infrared heaters work in much the same way. They have no moving parts or liquid, no fans and no noise, they simply push rays out silently into the room which heat the walls, furniture and people in it, rather than the air around them. These means that there is technically less to heat, and it completely eliminates any risk of damp or 'cold spots' in the room that you may have previously been concerned about.

Infrared heating now also comes in a variety shapes, sizes and styles. Often when we think of infrared heaters we think of clunky outdoor heaters, glowing with fierce heat, but with far infrared heating panels this has all changed. Heating panels can be hung on your wall and painted to be used as an item of decoration or camouflaged into your home, and they can even be fitted with a reflective surface to be used as a mirror.

Infrared technology, along with other leading electrical heating solutions, could actually make or break the future of home heating once we've all moved on from gas central heating and beginning adopting things like solar panels and renewable 'feed-in' tariffs. It's only a matter of time before the technology is further refined and makes its way into the mainstream of public consciousness.

What Is The Difference Between Standard ‘Infrared’ And ‘Far Infrared’ Heating?

Infrared heating technology has been in circulation for some time, mostly used in commercial concessions such as restaurants and factories and often mistaken for 'heat lamps' or similar looking apparatus. Over the last few years however, infrared technology has excelled in the home heating sector too, with many infrared heating panels being as stylish and unassuming as a painting hung on the wall or a mirror in the bathroom. This newer, more popular version of infrared heating is known as 'far infrared' heating, but how does it work?

To best explain the benefits of far infrared, let's first start by talking about standard or 'near' infrared. Near infrared heating is what most of us will be accredited to – the 'heat lamp' in the outside dining area of the restaurant or the wire protected heater hung above doors in factories and industrial kitchens. These heaters can emit temperatures of up to 1300 degrees Celsius, and you can often see a flaw glowing red light coming from the element. The heat delivered from near infrared units can often be a little too much to bear if you get too close, and most of us will have experienced this now and again when we've sat a little too close to a heater on a patio or outside dining area – the heat can be extremely fiercely, not ideal for the home.

Far infrared heating however, use 'long wave' infrared and reach temperatures of around 100 degrees Celsius – far more comfortable for use indoors at close proximacy. They also give off no light, and the heat is manageable with the addition of a thermostat. Another thing worth mentioning about far infrared is that, because of the lower temperature levels, the heating 'panel' can be painted and decorated to blend in with its surroundings. Perfect for those looking for a modern, stylish alternative to radiators.

If you're unsure as to how infrared heat may work, you only need to cast an eye to the sky and think about how the sun works. The sun heats our planet with infrared rays and, much like the sun, infrared heaters work by heating the objects in a given area rather than the air around it. With traditional heaters, say, electric convector heaters for example, there's an element element with a fan pushing the 'hot air' out into the room. This is the same way our standard radiators work. With infrared, only the objects in the room are heated – so the walls, furniture, and us!

If you are new to Wellington, then you are in for a surprise. Those who have lived here for months or years already know how changeable the weather can be at times. Wellington is always a place of pristine beauty and breathtaking scenery, everyone who has stood on the top of Mount Cook on a nice, warm sunny day attest to that. However, the weather is often unpredictable, unforgiving and extreme. The cold antarctic southerly winds that gust across Cook Strait unchallenged hit the Wellington coastline hard, and bringing free temperatures and subzero wind-chill factors with them to the exposed homes in Island Bay, Seatoun and Miramar. Even areas of the CBD like Jervois Quay and Oriental Parade can be buffeted hard in winter times. These freezing cold-snaps beat strong wind-dusts against your home, and rattle anyone who steps outside. The summer months can be quite the opposite, with dry, hot temperatures that could quickly fry an ostrich egg. That's when you see sun-dwellers lapping it up on the small stretches of beach in Oriental Bay, Days Bay and the Petone Foreshore.

Do not let the weather ruin your time in Wellington. Have a professional install a new HVAC heat-pump system in your home and take control of the weather under your roof.

Professional HVAC installations are what make it possible to live comfortably in a place with this kind of changing weather. With proper insulation and installation, you can keep your home at the temperature you like, despite what the temperature is outside. Slight errors in the installation could result in higher energy bills or malfunctioning systems, which is why it is so important that you take the time to find a qualified and certified specialist to perform the installation for you. A professional installation is quick, effective, and gets the job done, but only if it's performed by the right guy.

While your professional air-conditioning specialist is in your home installing the new HVAC system, he'll take the time to explain the mechanical and electrical functions of your HVAC system. This will help you deal with much of the regular maintenance and care over the years to come. The systems installed for two different households or offices are not always the same. For example your heat-pump system installed is usually chosen specifically and customized for your home, lifestyle, and preferences. There is a huge variety of different HVAC systems on the market and if you are not sure how each one, A qualified installer will point you in the right direction and let you know what counts and what to avoid.

He will work with you along each step of the way to ensure that the ideal HVAC heat-pump system is selected, fits within your budget, and can operate at maximum efficiency with your home. There are some other factors you'll have to consider, such as the overall cost to run the machine for years (ie energy and maintenance costs.). All of this information can be uncoovered with a professional heat-pump installer in Wellington.

His work does not stop there with the installation of the system. You can rely on him any time you need assistance, care, repairs, or maintenance for your HVAC system, whether it's a heating pump, ventilations system, or central air conditioner. Repairs are not something you should have to tackle yourself, as these are automated machines and you can trust a highly qualified, experienced professional who has been trained to work with them individually. If you have an HVAC heat pump or air-conditioning system that you need completely replaced, a professional installer can help you with that as well, from removing the old system to installing the new one. When it comes to expert advice, in-depth product knowledge and outstanding customer service, you can not go past a professional HVAC heat pump installer in Wellington. At least your home will always be at a comfortable temperature, whether it is a howling southerly swirling down Cook Strait or not.

Boiler Servicing is quite simply one of the most important tasks that should be entered into a domestic calendar. Getting your boiler served on a regular basis could save you a large amount of money. Plumbing and Heating professionals do not simply advise you to get a boiler service for the sake of it, getting your system checked regularly and can help an engineer diagnose and identify a problem before it becomes a major issue, costing you even further when it requires a repair .

As I have said in previous articles, you should never attempt to service a boiler yourself. Only a Gas Safe Registered engineer can work on a gas appliance. This makes sure that the boiler is worked correctly and ensures that you and your family stay safe all year round. There has been a numerous newspaper articles involving unqualified engineers completing boiler services that result in health problems for the home owners.

Any engineer that completes a boiler service will usually do the following:

  1. Clean the Burner and Injector or in some cases there may be more than one.
  2. Clean the Pilot and the Injector.
  3. Thoroughly check and clean the flue and the flue paths. Including the draft diverter and heat exchanger. This is to ensure there are no leaks or cracks within the flue itself.
  4. Check through and clean all of the ignition components.
  5. Examine and clean the flame supervision components.
  6. Clean the components and lubricate the controls.
  7. Act quickly and repair any gas leak that gets identified.

Once these checks have been carried out and the components cleaned thoroughly, the engineer will then look to:

  1. Check any disturbed Gas connections.
  2. Check all of the boiler seals, as well as every single joint. Decreasing the chances of further Gas leaks after the service has been carried out.
  3. Check for any obvious signs of wiring issues. Making sure that there no damages has occurred during the boiler service.
  4. Check the flame supervision device operation.
  5. If the service is being completed on a system that contains an open flue the engineer will check for any signs of spillages.

Once the above checks have been completed the engineer will look to reset the burner operating pressure to what ever the data label shows.

At this stage I would like to reiterate that you should never tried to complete a service yourself. A gas leak can cause a range of respiratory problems that in some cases may become fatal.

Why Should You Hire an Air Conditioner Duct Cleaning Company?

If your house or office block has air conditioners, you have to ensure that your ducts are cleaned on a frequent basis. This does not mean that the gas channels have to be cleaned on a daily basis. Rather, it means that you have to clean your air conditioner gas channels after a specified period of time has gone by. In most cases, air conditioner experts recommend cleaning gas channels after a total of three years has passed. Sometimes even a 5 year period is acceptable if your house or office block is located in an area that is free from smoke and dust particles. If you are wondering whether it is vital to hire a duct cleaning company or not, take your time to read this article.

Today, almost every household knows that air duct cleaning is healthy. Although there is only a little relationship between good health and ducts, the little relationship that exists between the two has a noticeable impact on people's lives. Everything lies in the impact that duct frailties can have on the performance of a conditioner. They can cause the conditioner to become exceedingly overworked. In addition to this, the conditioner will not control the temperature of the room. As a result, you will end up spending more money on either gas or electricity. If there are people in your home who are sensitive to the temperature of the room, they may be uncomfortable in a home where the temperature can not be conditioned to suit their desires. For example, asthma patients need sufficient ventilation and a warm temperature to prevent asthma attacks. If the conditioner is not working properly, such patients will be at risk of suffering from asthma attacks. You can prevent all this by simply hiring a reliable duct cleaning company.

If your house or office block is located in an area that is home to a lot of factories, your ducts will be at risk of becoming blocked within a short period of time. It always advisable to have such ducts cleaned after a total of 3 years has elapsed. If this period of time is exceeded, your ducts will become blocked. As a result, you will be forced to spend more money on electricity bills. This is something that you can avoid if you have your duct cleaned on a frequent basis.

As indicated above, you risk having your gas channels blocked if your house is located in an area that is surrounded by factories. For example, consider a house or office block which is near a mining town. The chances of the ducts becoming blocked will be very high thus leading to the poor performance of your conditioner. However, some conditioners fail to function properly if their gas channel is narrowed by a pile of dirt consisting of dust particles and smoke. Therefore, you need to hire a reliable air duct cleaning company to prevent any of the above from happening.

Why Heating and Cooling Maintenance Is Necessary

Your central air system is one of those things that quietly does its job. Day in day out it regulates your home's temperature to give you your desired temperature indoors what the weather is like outdoors. It is one of those things that you could easily forget is even there, that is until it goes out.

Trying to visualize what life would be like without modern heating and cooling systems is difficult for many of us.

Most people live where the temperatures vary from season to season, and those temperatures are not always comfortable without an effective home heating and cooling system. For example, a lot of people live in regions where the climate is hot during summers and frigid during winters. There can also be wide swings between the daytime temperature and the temperature at night. It should not come as any surprise that most people have heating systems in their homes. Residential cooling systems are also common, although a little less so.

Fortunately for all of us, heating and cooling systems are now more energy-efficient than ever before. They are better for the environment, but they also help to keep the cost of heating and cooling as low as possible. That being said, home heating and cooling still keep a great deal of energy. They represent two of the largest expenses of running a modern home.

There are two reasons it is important to regularly maintain your heating and cooling systems. First, a well-maintained system will be less likely to break down. And second, a well-maintained system is likely to run more efficiently, resulting in lower energy bills.

You can do some of the routine maintenance tasks yourself. For example, it is easy to help keep your units free of excessive dust and grime – it is just a matter of cleaning your home regularly. It is also easy to monitor the status of your units' air filters. A clogged air filter will cause your heating or cooling system to run less efficiently. Luckily, replacing a dirty air filter is usually very quick and easy.

At least once a year, you will need to call in a qualified HVAC service technician for additional heating and cooling system maintenance. A trained technician will inspect your units and identify any signs of wear and tear in their components. If any problems are found, the damaged components can be replaced promptly, and that can help to prevent more serious future problems.

An air conditioner can be an essential product for your home, especially in the heat of summer when you want to keep the inside temperature bearable. These products are widely available in different sizes, different brands and different types, so you need to decide which one you feel will benefit you the most.

There are some factors you should take into consideration before making a final decision. One of these is the efficiency of the unit. While you want your interior air to remain cool, you do not want your energy bill to sky rocket through the roof, which is why you need to pay very careful attention to the overall efficiency of the product and choose one that will not break the bank every time you switch it on.

Another important consideration, is while you may not know the manufacturer names, you need to ensure the air conditioner you are looking at is reliable and dependable. Once installed you do not want to replace the product any time soon, it should last for years, providing your family with cool temperatures in the home while it's sweltering outside.

Ensure you visit some stores and see the air conditioners working. Because the product is being placed in your home, the last thing you want is excessive noise, making it hard to relax or watch television. You want a product that will run quietly while providing your family with cool air.

The size of the unit is exceptionally important and you should discuss this in detail with the companies you are speaking to about supply. You do not want a unit that is too small, as it will not be able to keep the property cool and too big, also has negative impacts on your energy efficiency, not to mention is overkill. You need the best solution for the size of your home; based on number of rooms you require cooling and the size of those rooms.

When looking at the various air conditioners available, you will notice you can choose between wall mounted and central options. Wall mounted are stylish in design and are placed on a wall, cooling a single room.

Central units on the other hand provide a complete cooling system throughout the home, using ducts to cool the home in summer months.

Design is another important element. If you have a modern home, you're not going to want to place an older window mounted air conditioner in a room; you're going to want to choose stylish, elegant and sophisticated wall mounted or central cooling systems.

Ensure you use a company that you are comfortable with and that has an extensive experience and knowledge in the air conditioner industry. This way you can trust their recommendations and suggestions based on the size and number of rooms you have in your home.

The company should provide you with a number of different air conditioner solutions for you to choose from. They should explain why they believe these are the right choice for you and then leave you to do your own research on the products available.

When you receive a quote, ensure you go online and learn as much about each product as possible, enabling you to make an informed decision on the best choice for you and your family.

Ensure you check on their installation procedures; see how long it will take delivery and how experienced their team is on installations. You want peace of mind that you will have a trustworthy and experienced team in your home that will do a top quality installation job, which will last for many years.

Air conditioner ducts always come with properly insulated covers. If you have a conditioner which ducts are not properly insulated, you need to seek urgent help immediately. Today, there are many companies that are providing duct insulating services. You can either pay them a visit or simply contact them by means of a phone call or email. In most developed countries, insulating companies also have websites which you can refer to if you have any questions or questions patterning to their services. If you do not know the vitality of having properly insulated ducts ducts, read this article to find out.

First of all, you need to safeguard the life of your conditioner. This is something that most householders forget. If the ducts are not properly insulated, your conditioner may either be overworked or it may even be damaged beyond repair. There are some conditioners which are very sensitive to the nature of the insulation on the ducts. Such conditioners may not even function at all if the ducts do not have proper insulation or they are not insulated at all. Therefore, do not rule out improper insulation when your conditioners start showing signs of wearing out.

Some air conditioners need to have their insulators replaced on a regular basis. If this is not done, they will not function properly. As indicated above, most air conditioners get overworked if the insulation on the duct has deteriorated. Some conditioners have been designed with insulation detectors which show that a duct's insulation has started wearing out. If your conditioner does not have this technological feature, you need to check the state of the insulators on a frequent basis. When you see that the states of your condition's insulators are bad, you need to hire an insulator replacement company.

Did you know that a poorly insulated duct can lead to the damage of your conditioner's HVAC system? This is something that can happen if you do have the insulators replaced in time or shortly after discovering that it is in a bad state. In most cases, this happens because the air begins to leak from the vents thus causing the HVAC system to become excessively overworked. In addition, the temperature of the room will also be compromised. Your contractor will eventually start failing to alter the temperature of the environment in the home.

When the air begins to leak, the HVAC system of the condition will automatically be required to use up more energy to move air from one point of the duct to another. This means that the volume of air that it can move in a particular period of time will decrease at the expense of more electrical energy. As a result, you will be required to spend more money on your electricity bills. In addition to spending more money on your electricity bills, you will also be required to have your HVAC system as well as your insulation replaced. This may cost you a lot of money.

As the summer is approaching, homeowners will be willingly looking for efficient air conditioning systems. Air conditioning is a godsend during the hot summer months but as summer months fade away, people tend to forget the value of it.

Air conditioning repair is a major household expense. To avoid the likelihood of your air conditioner breaking down, it is important to keep it properly maintained. Furthermore, it is important that the repair of air conditioners is performed properly. The fact remains that the repair depends on the problem associated with the air conditioner. Taking into consideration ever increasing air conditioning sales, here are some important points which will save you both energy and money.

Tips to Increase the Efficiency of Your Cooling System

# 1: Buy Supplementary Products: If you are buying a new air conditioning unit, you should not only select an energy efficient unit, but also purchase suitable insulation and weatherization products, which can help to save energy. Insulate the walls, floors, attic, duct system perfectly. Seal doors and windows properly.

# 2: Avoid Direct Sunlight: You should control direct sunlight with the help of shades and curtains; thus reducing the effect of radiant heat from the sun. Trees planted near windows can work as obstacles for hot sun rays. Additionally, all doors and windows should be closed properly.

# 3: Regular Repairs and Servicing: Only a properly tuned air conditioning system can run effectively and can save your money. Furnace or air handler filters need to be replaced regularly. You can always sign an annual maintenance agreement with a licensed dealer to ensure your air conditioning system is always operating at peak efficiency. A delay in air conditioning repair can lead to increased electricity bills and a waste of energy. It is also recommended to clean the condenser / evaporator coils at the beginning of each season.

# 4: Check the Exhaust Fans: Switch off the exhaust fans in kitchen and bathrooms as soon as the job is done; otherwise, they will blow the expensive cool air out.

# 5: Use of Proper Cooling Systems: A central cooling system is more expensive than window air conditioners. With window units you can choose the area that needs to be cooled and can save money & energy.

# 6: Avoid Keeping Lower Thermostat Settings: Thermostat setting should be set no lower than between 21 ° C – 23 ° C. This will keep you comfortable and save on energy costs.

Tips before Purchasing an Air Conditioner

For people who are worried about the summer heat of May-June and itchy humid weather of July-August, it is recommended to follow these two simple steps:

# 1: Tonnage: The bigger the better: Tonnage is referred to as the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. The size of the ac does not matters; rather it's the capacity that needs to be checked beforehand. An oversized air-conditioner is less effective and less energy efficient. Therefore, pick the right size of air conditioner for your room. For example; if the room size is up-to 120 Sq feet, then the capacity required will be 0.75 ton. Similarly, if the room size is 121-150 Sq feet, then the capacity required will be up to 1 ton and so on. A reputable HVAC contractor will conduct a proper heat / loss calculation in order to determine the proper sized unit for your home. It is not a “one size fits all” type of scenario!

# 2: Energy Efficiency: If you are planning to buy an air conditioner, make sure that it is more energy efficient and consumes less power. Check for the SEER rating, which will help to cut down on power consumption and saves energy. While units with a higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) rating are more expensive, the higher the SEER value, the more energy efficient the system is!

Consider all these measures in assisting you with selecting the best air conditioner for your home and reducing the amount of air conditioner repairs that you may encounter in your air conditioning system.

Many people contact leak detection companies to come out and find a leak in their house.

When asked what evidence they have that they have a leak, we are often told that there is dampness or a damp musty smell.

In order to keep their costs down we would advise them to get a plumber to carry out the following tests to prove if they have a leak on their pipeline.

1 – Turn off the mains water supply to the storage tank in the attic and put a pressure gauge on the incoming mains water.

2 – Put a pressure gauge on the outlet of the hot water cylinder and turn off the supply to the cylinder.

3 – Install a pressure gauge on the heating system and turn off the top up to the heating.

Keep the test on for say, twenty four hours. Do not use any water out of the pipe lines that you are testing as this will make the test pointless. If any of the above pressure tests drop then it is very likely that there is a leak on it.

The first 2 are fairly straight forward if you find that they are leaking as the only option you have left is to get a leak detection company to narrow it down.

A leak on the central heating system is a lot trickier and harder to narrow down.

This is due to the larger distance in pipework and the system being being heated up so that the leak may not be as bad when the heating is on as the pipework will expand and close down the hole that the water is escaping through. However a plumber can still help you out here.

If it is possible the plumber could install gate valves on the system to separate it into zones and pressure test each zone on its own to narrow it down further.

There is also the pipes leading out to the boiler and back again that could be leaking, these can also have valves fitted and be pressure tested.

One part that many people overlook and is not so rare to happen, is that in the copper cylinder there is a coil of central heating pipe that can leak. This can be tested by valving it off and testing the rest of the heating system. If it holds pressure then the leak is on the coil in the cylinder.

If none of the above tests show any drop in pressure then the problem of the dampness is not due to a leaking pipe. We would suggest you contact a good building contractor to inspect the roof, windows and damp proof courses.

Are you already worried about the massive summer energy bills that will pop through your door? If you are, you need to learn how to get your air conditioner ready for summer.

Some homeowners accept that their energy bills will rise during the summer months but there are actions you can take to prevent this from happening. Prepare your AC unit for the hot weather and you could:

. Lower energy bills

. Prevent costly breakdowns that happen when you most depend on the AC

. Create a warm and comfortable home to live in

. Maximize the life of your HVAC system

An air conditioning system enterprises of three parts:

. A wall mounted unit

. A wall-mounted indoor unit

. Air ducts

All three parts need to be checked and serviced in readiness for the hot summer months. When the seasons are about to change you should check the following:

1. Inspect the AC Air Filters and Change if Necessary

The air filters play an important role. The filters regulate room temperature and filter-out debris, dust and pollen. Before summer arrives it is important to check the condition of the air filter in the AC unit and change it if needs be. A clogged filter makes the system work less efficiently and this can lead to higher energy bills. This is one reason why it is important to check and change the air filters.

Homeowners who are not able to change their own filters should hire an experienced HVAC engineer to do the job. The new filters will stop airborne pathogens, dust, pollen and other impurities from affecting the indoor air quality.

2. Carry out an Inspection on the Ductwork

Check the ductwork and all other piping before summer arrives. Lookout for leaks, debris or obstructions and inspect the joints closely.

3. Think about installing a Thermostat the can be Programmed

Numerous studies show that a programmable thermostat helps to make an air conditioning system more efficient. Setback thermostats are easy to install and they are affordable. The thermostat ensures that the room remains at the desired temperature, so no energy is wasted.

4. Clear Debris from the Exterior Unit

There should be around two feet of clear space surrounding the unit. This space allows the air to flow freely around the unit.

5. Examine the Condensate Removal System

Condensation forms when warm air flows through the cooling coil. Condensation can be removed in numerous ways, however, it is vital to test the switches when getting the AC system ready for the summer months.

The tips listed above are designed to help homeowners get their AC units ready for the summer. Those who can not do the jobs themselves should consider hiring an air conditioning expert to carry out the necessary maintenance checks.

Having a mobile home has many benefits, somewhere, where you can escape too, and relax whenever you get the chance.

But what about maintenance?

Mobile homes tend to lack maintenance until something goes wrong, but just like your main home, they should be maintained on a regular basis.

The mobile home water heater never gets looked at till it breaks down, but just like your central heating boiler ay home, it should be serviced annually.

Most of the new mobile homes are now supplied with a full central heating system installed, run by an LPG combination boiler.

Older models were supplied with an LPG water heater, usually fitted in a compartment somewhere.

The most popular heaters were made by Morco and Bosch.

They produced around 5-6 liters of hot water per minute, which for the average family was enough.

Now though, if you need to repair or replace your heater, both Morco and Bosch have discontinued production of these models.

Searching the internet you may be able to find a replacement or parts, but these are old stock, and you will pay through the nose for your model.

So what options are there for mobile home water heaters?

If your heater has stopped working, you have two options.

One, try and get it repaired, which could cost you nearly as much as replacing it, or two, replace it with a new model,

A Spanish company now produces a replacement for the Morco and Bosch water heaters.

The make is called Forcali, they produce two models, 6 and 10-liter versions.

Each water heater is supplied with standoff brackets to bring it inline with the existing flue.

It's best practice though to replace the flue at the same time.

Everything needed for the installation is supplied in the box, even the flue adapter.

These replacement models have been designed to save on running costs by having no fixed pilot.

The water heater operates automatically as and when there is a call for hot water.

Your old water heater was probably D rated, whereas these new units are rated and better for the environment.

Like I said at the beginning, mobile homes need regular maintenance to keep them working, but the most important thing is SAFETY.

When you arrange for someone to carry out the maintenance, make sure they are Gas Safe Registered, and that they also registered to work on LPG.
